The department of Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering in Xi’an Jiaotong University was established in 1956. It is the earliest major in Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering set up for undergraduates in China. It was firstly authorized to grant Master's degree and Doctor’s degree and engage in postdoctoral research station among the similar disciplines inChina. The first undergraduate students and Master degree candidates graduated in 1961 and 1964, respectively. In 1992, during the national academic assessment for the secondary disciplines of power engineering and engineering thermophysics, the discipline of refrigeration and cryogenics engineering in Xi'an Jiaotong University ranked No.1 inChina. It was firstly authorized to offer the Changjiang Chair Professor Position in 1998. And it was approved to be National Key Disciplines in 2001.

Since the discipline was founded, it plays significant roles in both talent training and scientific and technological research. And it develops plenty of high standards professional talents. Lots of professional books in refrigeration and cryogenic engineering have been compiled, including more than 40 specialty textbooks. Greater than 700 research papers were published on various journals. Nine State awards and 30 Ministry level awards in scientific and technological areas have been awarded. In recent years, the department has received financial support from “National Natural Science Fund”, “973 Programme ”, “High-Tech Research and Development (863) Programme”, “National Key Technology R&D Program” and “Defense Pre-research Project” and so on. Thus it has obtained a series of research results and made a great improvement in the discipline development.

The Department of Refrigeration and Cryogenics (IRC) currently has 20 staff members, including 6 professors, 2 associate professors and 1 senior engineer. Faculty members also include one “Experts with Outstanding Contribution to the State”, one “Expert with Outstanding Contribution to Shaanxi Province”, two “New Century Excellent Talents in University” by the Ministry of Educations and one “Three Five Talent in Shaanxi Province”. The main research fields focus on the thermophysic process of refrigeration and cryogenic systems, the energy-saving technologies in refrigeration, air-conditioning and cryogenic engineering fields and working process as well as reliability of refrigerating machinery etc. Under the guidance of National Long-term Scientific Development Plan and the enterprise developing demands, the department makes more efforts on the talent training, scientific and technological research to create a new development.
