摘要:
This study investigates the integration of an auto-replenishment system and human oversight in inventory management. While managers oversight can enhance the effectiveness of the auto-replenishment algorithm by leveraging their private information, they may also deviate due to their inherent behavioral biases. We conducted a field experiment in which the auto-replenishment algorithm was implemented in 20 treatment stores, with the other56 stores as controls. Previously, managers tended to place large and ad-hoc orders due to the cognitive complexity of managing thousands of items in a store, resulting in excessive inventory and reduced service levels. The auto-replenishment system helps automate the ordering process, thereby mitigating managers’ negligence bias by prompting them to order when inventory levels are low and improving ordering frequency by recommending smaller order quantities as an anchor. The results show a significant service level improvement in stores using the system, without additional inventory. The study finds that managers tend to override the system’s recommendations for popular items due to their experience, while they are more likely to follow the system’s recommendations for non-popular items. These insights emphasize the need for a balanced approach between the precision of the auto-replenishment system and human expertise, particularly for managing less popular items.
