With an 80-year history in nursing education, the School of Nursing of Xi’an Jiaotong University is one of the top universities to provide university-based nursing education programs in China. The School has a vigorous mission to provide a diverse and holistic nursing education and to prepare graduates to become pioneers of the nursing profession and play significant parts in nursing administration, nursing education, nursing research, advanced clinical nursing, and community health nursing.

Educational Program

The Bachelor of Nursing program commenced in 1987 and the School currently offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral programs, and continuing educational nursing programs as well. The undergraduate program enrolls new students from senior high schools with its four-year curriculum. In 1994, the three-year postgraduate program was initiated. The continuing education program awards associate degrees to teachers from the secondary nursing schools and hospitals upon the completion of the program. In 2008, a six-year program was launched in order to be congruent with the development of nursing. All the students will receive their Master’s Degrees after completing the program. Since 2009, a new collaborated bachelor program has been established with Japan. In 2014, the School started to recruit international students from the countries along the Belt and Road. More than 165 master students, 395 bachelor students, and 84 associate degree students have graduated from the School. The doctorate program for Clinical Nursing Education in the School was accredited by the state in 2015. There are 157 current students in nursing studies, including 120 undergraduate students, 60 postgraduate students and 13 doctoral students.

Faculties

Currently, the School of Nursing has a total of 53 faculty members (10 professors, 14 associate professors) and 29 lectures, technicians and administration staffs. Among them, 3 are PhD supervisors, 26 are M.sc supervisors. Most of faculty members obtained their PhD degrees from top universities and institutions, and also had the experiences of studying overseas. They not only have solid theoretical basis, but also good education skills. In addition, many faculties act as the chief editor, co-chief editor or editor for the important nursing journals, and national textbooks and many other professional publications.

Teaching Facilitates

Located at the Health Science Center, nursing building has pleasant environment with entire areas of 300 square meters. There are many kings of labs for student’s practice, including medical, surgery, maternal, pediatric, intensive care unit, fundamentals of nursing and other labs. The rooms are facilitated with computer, video recorder, monitor, color TV, body models, modern nursing equipment, special nursing practice plates, and other modern communication facilities. Except above, the seminar room is prepared for flexible teaching methods and academic exchange.

Academic and Research Development

The academic development is rapid. The faculty currently has four special fields, including spiritual-psychological nursing, community-geriatric nursing, internal-surgical nursing and gynecological – pediatric nursing. Moreover, the faculty is granted by many research funds from numerous national and international organizations. In recent 5 years, the facilitates got a total of 35 scientific research projects at all levels, including 6 national projects, 18 provincial projects, 11 other horizontal projects, and the total research funding reached 10.27 million RMB. In addition, around 65 national textbooks and professional books have been edited by the faculty members, and over 600 academic papers have been published totally.

International Cooperation and Exchange

The School has developed a solid network with international organizations and first-class universities and schools of nursing, including the World Health Organization, the World Council of Enterostomal Therapists, and universities in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong and etc. International communication strengthens student and academic exchanges as well as research collaboration. In 1993, Xi’an Jiaotong University collaborated with Chiang Mai University in Thailand and other key Chinese national medical universities to conduct the Program of High Nursing Education Development (POHNED), supported by the China Medical Board of New York. This program is the cornerstone of Chinese higher nursing education, having a profound influence on the development of professional nursing in China. Graduates of the School are playing significant and leading roles in the nursing profession; therefore, it is widely recognized as the “West Point of Nursing” in China.
