Basic Information

Xu Feng, Professor at the School of Life Science and Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong University; Director of the Key Laboratory of Biomedical Information Engineering (Ministry of Education); Director of the Smart Diagnosis Technology and Equipment Center of the National Medical Research and Education Integration Platform (Medical-Engineering Division); Director of Xi'an Key Laboratory of Multi-scale Bio-Mechanical-Thermal-Electrical Coupling Engineering. He received dual Bachelor's degrees in Thermal Power Engineering and Industrial Engineering from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2001, and a Master's degree in Thermal Engineering in 2004. In 2008, he obtained his Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Cambridge. From 2008 to 2011, he served as a postdoctoral fellow and researcher at Harvard Medical School/Harvard-MIT Health Science & Technology Institute. In 2011, he returned to China as a full-time faculty member and has since been selected for the “Youth Thousand Talents Program” of the Central Organization Department, supported by the National Natural Science Foundation’s "Excellent Young Scientists Fund" and "Distinguished Young Scholars" programs, Shaanxi Province’s “Hundred Talents Program,” and the Ministry of Education’s “New Century Excellent Talents” program. He is also an expert entitled to Special Government Allowances from the State Council. In 2018, as a member of Xi'an Jiaotong University's "Westward Migration" patriotic team, he gave lectures on their achievements at the Great Hall of the People and across the country. In 2023, he was selected as a member of the Shaanxi Provincial "Spirit of Scientists" lecture team.

 

Research Achievements:

He has published 4 monographs/textbooks in both Chinese and English and over 350 journal articles as first or corresponding author in high-impact international journals such as Nature Chemistry, PNAS, Nature Communications, Matter, Chemical Reviews, Progress in Materials Science, Materials Science and Engineering R, Advanced Materials, and ACS Nano. He has also published in renowned mechanics journals such as Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, Applied Mechanics Reviews, Advances in Applied Mechanics, Journal of Biomechanics, and Journal of Fluid Mechanics. He holds more than 60 granted invention patents, some of which have achieved key applications. His research has received more than 32,000 citations (Google Scholar), with an H-index of 93. Twenty-five of his papers are recognized as ESI Highly Cited Papers, and one as an ESI Hot Paper. Sixty of his articles have been selected as cover or back-cover papers in journals such as Science Advances, Materials Science and Engineering R, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, ACS Nano, Small, and Lab on a Chip. His papers have been cited by Nobel laureates and academicians worldwide in over 32,000 citations.

 

He has received the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award (second contributor, 2015), the First Prize of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Award (second contributor, 2014), the Second Prize of Henan Province’s Scientific and Technological Progress Award (third contributor, 2017), the First Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award (third contributor, 2018), and the First Prize of Shaanxi Provincial Higher Education Science and Technology Awards (first contributor, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021). Professor Xu has also received individual honors such as the China Mechanics Young Scientist Award (2017, awarded to only 4 people nationwide that year), the Shaanxi Youth Science and Technology Role Model (2016), and the Shaanxi Youth Science and Technology Award (2016), as well as the May Fourth Youth Medal of Shaanxi Province (2016) and the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China Commemorative Medal (2019). He has been listed in the Global Top 2% Scientists List (2020-2022), as a Highly Cited Researcher in Cross-Disciplinary Fields by Clarivate Analytics (2021-2023), and as an Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researcher (2023).

 

He is the founding Executive Editor-in-Chief of the journal Translational Dental Research (TDR), and serves as Associate Editor for View, Journal of Mechanics in Medicine and Biology, Journal of Medical Imaging and Health Informatics, and ASME Journal of Nanotechnology in Engineering and Medicine. He is also the Associate Editor of the ASME book series Biomedical Nanomedicine Technology (B&NT). Additionally, he serves on the editorial boards of authoritative journals such as Progress in Mechanics, Chinese Journal of Lasers, and Biofabrication. He has edited six special issues in journals including Drug Discovery Today, Biotechnology Journal, and Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A.

 

Professor Xu is a member of the NIH ImuBEAM Working Group (one of only 24 global members), a member of the International Advisory Committee for the NSF Center for Engineering MechanoBiology (CEMB), a founding member of the International Advisory Committee for Nanomedicine and Nanobiotechnology (IACNEMB), and serves as Vice Chair of the External Communication and Cooperation Committee of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. He is a committee member of the Beijing International Center for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (BicTAM), an External Assessor and Programme Examiner for the University of Malaya’s (ranked 59th in the QS World University Rankings) Biomedical Engineering discipline, and a committee member of the Biomechanics Committee of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering and the Chinese Society of Mechanics. He has co-chaired eight international conferences on biomechanics, served as an organizer and Steering Committee member for the ASME series of NEMB conferences (2013-2015), chaired over 20 conference sessions, and has been invited to give one plenary talk, four keynote talks, and more than 20 invited talks at international academic conferences in the past five years. Professor Xu Feng has led numerous vertical research projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation’s Excellent Young Scientists Fund, General Projects, International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Projects, as well as sub-projects under the National Key Instruments Special Project, the Ministry of Education’s Major Science and Technology Special Project, the Ministry of Education's Joint Pre-research Fund for Equipment, and the China-Korea International Science and Technology Cooperation and Exchange Special Project.

 

Team Building:

In terms of team development, Professor Xu has focused on academic philosophy, research objectives, and development planning. Upon returning to China in 2011, he established the Bioengineering and Biomechanics Research Center at Xi’an Jiaotong University (http://bebc.xjtu.edu.cn/) and currently serves as its Director. He has assembled a multidisciplinary innovation team capable of conducting high-level interdisciplinary research. The team currently comprises 30 core faculty members, more than 40 postdoctoral researchers, and over 100 clinical doctors. The team’s expertise spans biomechanics, materials science, cell/tissue engineering, electrochemistry, biology, and clinical medicine, providing a strong foundation for tackling challenging frontier scientific questions and developing effective tools to address these problems. As the team leader, Professor Xu received the Innovation Team Award for Contributions to the Overseas Chinese Community (2016). The team was recognized as a Shaanxi Provincial Innovative Team (2016), a Shaanxi Provincial International Science and Technology Cooperation Base (2017), a Three Qin Youth Science and Technology Innovation Advanced Team (2020), the Xi’an Key Laboratory of Multi-scale Bio-Mechanical-Thermal-Electrical Coupling Engineering (2021), and a Shaanxi Provincial Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Base (2023).

 

Teaching and Talent Cultivation:

Professor Xu was awarded the inaugural Outstanding Young Graduate Supervisor Award Fund (2023) and received First Prize in the Second Shaanxi Micro-Class Teaching Competition (2017). He was also honored with the title of Star of Xi’an in the education field (2018). In terms of postdoctoral training, he has focused on cultivating innovative talent with independent research capabilities. To date, he has mentored more than 40 postdoctoral researchers, 18 of whom have earned national and provincial talent titles, and five have won provincial science and technology awards. Notable trainees include Ma Le, who received the National Excellent Young Scientists Fund, Li Fei, a recipient of the Ministry of Education’s New Century Excellent Talents Program, and three scholars who participated in the China Postdoctoral International Exchange Program (Han Fei, Li Yuan, Jin Guorui). The team has also been awarded 5 China Postdoctoral Science Foundation Special Grants, 16 General Grants, and 3 Shaanxi Provincial Distinguished Young Scientists Fund recipients (Li Fei, Tu Kangsheng, Guo Hui). Professor Xu's team members have received various recognitions, including the Shaanxi Youth QR Program (Wang Lin, Feng Ailing), the Shaanxi Youth Science and Technology Award (Qu Kai), the May Fourth Youth Medal of Shaanxi Province (Sha Baoyong), and Young Top Talents in the Special Support Plan of Shaanxi Province (Sha Baoyong, Ma Yufei).

 

Furthermore, four team members (Yang Qingzhen, Huang Guoyou, Ma Le, and Sha Baoyong) were selected for the First Batch of Outstanding Young Talents in Shaanxi Province, and one team member (Jin Guorui) received the Xi’an Science and Technology Talent Award. Additionally, Han Lichun received the titles of National Advanced Individual in the Fight Against the COVID-19 Epidemic and Outstanding Communist Party Member. In terms of graduate student mentorship, Professor Xu emphasizes nurturing innovative, diligent, and optimistic talent. His graduate students have earned multiple honors, including 20 National Scholarships, provincial and university-level science and technology progress awards, and the Academic Star and Outstanding Academic Pioneer awards at Xi’an Jiaotong University. Notable graduate student accomplishments include Lin Min (recipient of the National Excellent Young Scientists Fund), Han Yulong (recipient of the National Overseas Youth Fund), and two recipients of the China Postdoctoral Innovation Talent Support Program (Li Yuhui, He Xiaocong). Other achievements include Hu Jie, who won the China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award, Lin Min, who received the Shaanxi Youth Science and Technology Talent Award, and several team members (Lin Min, Sha Baoyong, Ji Changchun, Wang Hu) who were named Shaanxi Youth Science and Technology Rising Stars. Additional recognitions include nominations for the Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award from the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering (You Minli), the Shaanxi Provincial Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award (Lin Min), and the Xi’an Jiaotong University Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award (Han Yulong, Hu Jie). Furthermore, Lin Min and Ji Changchun were honored with the Xi’an Youth Science and Technology Talent Award, and Shi Meng received the Athanasiou ABME Student Award. Several team members were awarded the NSF Summer Fellowship (Liu Han, Liu Hao, Li Moxiao, Gong Yan), and Ji Changchun, Wang Hu, Ma Teng, and Wei Zhao were recognized with the Second Prize in the Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. Additionally, five team members have won Best Poster Awards at international academic conferences.
