XJTU graduate publishes latest research finding in Science Magazine

Hao Zeyu, an alumnus of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), became the first author of a scientific report titled "Electric Field–tunable Superconductivity in Alternating-twist Magic-angle Trilayer Graphene" and published in Science magazine on March 12.

Together with his teammates, Hao added another twisted layer to the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), which was realized by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2018. According to his latest findings, relevant theories gained from previous research are applicable and the MATBG exhibits new phenomena.

Hao was admitted into an experimental class of physics at the XJTU in 2012. He went to the US as an exchange student at a number of universities, including the University of California, Berkeley, the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the University of Notre Dame, during his undergraduate study.

Hao became a Ph.D student in physics at Harvard University in 2017. He has focused his research on Bose-Einstein condensation of two-dimensional materials and magic-angle graphene over the past several years.

Before the latest publication in Science magazine, Hao has already published a scientific paper as the first author in Nature magazine.

The major of physics at the XJTU was included into a pilot program for cultivating top-notch students in basic disciplines by the Ministry of Education in 2009. Since then, a number of talented students with strong interest in fundamental research of physics will be selected into the experimental class every year.

As of 2020, 258 students had graduated from the experimental class of physics. Many of them have joined leading research teams at home and abroad and shown their talent in relevant fields. Two graduates even appeared on the annual Forbes 30 Under 30 China List.
